New album out early next year - July 3, 2009

Time to let you in on the plans for our upcoming ninth (or tenth, depending on how you count) full-length album. The as-yet-untitled beast will be recorded in September and October and released in early 2010 through Century media records.

We'll keep the recording setup completely in-house this time. Drums will be tracked in Daniel Antonsson's studio, while the remaining instruments will be immortalized in Martin Brändström's newly renovated Rogue music facilities. The mixing duties will once again be handled by Tue Madsen in his Antfarm studio in Denmark.

As for the music itself, it's a bit too early to delve into details, but the material feels diverse and fresh and covers all the facets of the D.T. sound. Those who are familiar with our songwriting process know that we always keep re-arranging and experimenting with the material until the recording starts, and while we currently have the basic foundations for around 10 songs, many things are still open. The final result is likely to surprise ourselves as well as you people.

Some tentative song titles are "I am the void", "Zero distance", "the burden of love alive", "Archangelsk" and "Memories in reverse", though these are subject to change as usual.

Well, more news will follow in due time...

What in the wide, wide world of sports... - May 11, 2009

Pic: Peter Herneheim / www.herneheim.se

...is a-goin' on here?

Somehow we got lured into a soccer tournament this past weekend. For me this was the first time on a soccer field since my athletic peak in 1982 but because we put together a great team we managed to get to the semi-finals, ending up with the bronze medal. Jonas, Anders, Martin, Daniel, Anders B and Per really delivered every step of the way and we had an awesome time exhausting ourselves in front of the cheerful 3000+ audience.

We are already in training for next year's showdown. Cheers and thanks to all who supported us.

Mikael
Team Dark Tranquillity/The Haunted

End-of-year recap - January 8, 2009

2008 was truly one of the most active years in D.T. history, with close to 100 shows being played in most corners of the world. Apart from seeing a lot of familar faces on the regular US tour and European/Scandinavian headline trips, we also had the pleasure of visiting more remote territory such as Japan, Taiwan, China, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Turkey, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Argentina. In addition, the first proper headline tours of the UK and Finland were made, which of course were long overdue.

This year will probably be a bit more calm on the live front, as we'll first and foremost focus on the songwriting for the new album, but there are already a couple of shows and festivals confirmed and more are in the pipeline.

As most of you know, we'll release our second DVD later this year, recorded at the Rolling Stone in Milan, Italy. The preview footage we've seen looks absolutely killer, and the material is currently being edited by the good folks of Vasara films in Finland. More info on this will follow in the near future.

Well, thanks for the support and have a prosperous 2009!

The Scandinavian leg of the tour, under the "Close-up made us do it"-flag, is now complete. Thanks to Engel and Dead by April for great company and great shows. Also, huge salutations to our beloved crew for making all of this possible and of course to all you people sometimes traveling very long distances to attend the gigs.

Photos and video clips will be posted here as soon as time permits.

Shows in Spain confirmed - November 24, 2008

European leg of tour complete - November 13, 2008

Yesterday in Copenhagen was the last date of the mainland Europe leg (a.k.a. the "Where death is most alive" part)
of the tour. Everything went great and our already high expectations for the first proper headline venture in a while were surpassed every night. Thanks to anyone that showed up at the shows and of course to Poisonblack and Fear my thoughts for being great people as well as great bands.

Now, it's time to kickstart the "Close-up made us do it" part of the tour, and we welcome Engel and Dead by April to the madness.

Nell Sigland to guest on Oslo show - November 10, 2008

Pic: Piero Paravidino

We're proud to announce that Dark tranquillity again is a six-piece (or sixpack if you will). Daniel Antonsson is now officially our new bass player, and we look forward to starting to work on the next album with such a talented musician in the ranks.

Other than that, the tour is going great! Expect a full update in the next couple of days.

Winterfire festival clarification - November 5, 2008

There has been some confusion regarding this date, but we can clear all doubts and let you know that we're definitely appearing at the Winterfire festival in Giessen, Germany on the 21st of February. More info can be found here.

Stanne comments on upcoming tour - October 22, 2008

We have been working extremely hard to make the upcoming tour a very special event, both for us and for the audience. To commemorate the fact that next year marks our 20th anniversary, we've revamped the setlist and will offer an extensive collection of songs representing all facets of our career. The music ranges from material written 1992 to "Fiction" tracks never before performed live, so all in all it'll be a dynamic mixture of old and new material.

As most of you know, the Milan show on October 31 will be recorded for an upcoming DVD, and this evening will feature a guest musician as well as some other surprises. We're also taking the opportunity to bring in a more extensive stageshow than usual for the whole tour, this time centered around custom animations/projections.

These shows also mark the end of the "Fiction" touring cycle. After this trip, we'll lock ourselves up in the dark confines of the rehearsal room to focus on the songwriting for the next album, so we recommend everyone to catch us on this tour, as it'll be the last chance for quite some time in most territories. However, a few select shows for 2009 are already being planned.

Stanne to host growling seminars - October 2, 2008

A piece of oddball news: Mikael - who constantly gets asked tons of questions from aspiring young vocalists about his singing technique - will host a couple of growling workshops here in Gothenburg. Topics to be covered include the fundamentals of growling/screaming technique as well as how to maintain vocal stamina and clarity in a touring situation.

Winterfire festival confirmed - October 2, 2008

The main focus for next year will be the songwriting for the new album, but we can now announce the first show for 2009. On February 21, we'll headline the Winterfire festival in Giessen, Germany.

D.T. welcomes Daniel Antonsson - September 19, 2008

Pic © Shadow Angelina

The response to our bassist search has been overwhelming, and we want to send our sincere thanks to everyone that got in touch. Applications poured in from pretty much every continent, and some of the interested musicians are members in bands that we have been huge fans of for many years, which was extremely flattering.

However, we can now announce that the search is over, and that we've recruited Daniel Antonsson (Dimension Zero, ex-Soilwork) to handle the bass duties for the upcoming tour. We welcome Daniel to the fold and look forward to hitting the road with him.

Thanks for your patience!

And of course, people are still welcome to get in touch via dtheadquarters@gmail.com. If you're an experienced bass player with good stage presence and an easy going personality, you might be the one we're looking for.

DARK TRANQUILLITY seeks new bassist
- August 27, 2008

With the recent departure of Michael Nicklasson, we're searching for a new bass player. First and foremost we need someone to fill in on the upcoming Europan tour in October/November, and in the longer perspective we want a steady member that can participate in the songwriting for the next studio album.

We are looking for a creative, skilled and experienced bass player who lives in the Gothenburg area or is willing to relocate.

Interested and serious people are welcome to send an email with all relevant info to dtheadquarters@gmail.com.

The bass duties on the Loud from the South festival in Holland this saturday will be handled by Michael Håkansson, formerly of Evergrey and Engel - huge thanks for stepping in on such short notice.

Nicklasson out of the band - August 23, 2008

Pic: Peter Herneheim

D.T. has parted ways with longtime bass player Michael Nicklasson. All booked shows will go on as scheduled with a session bassist. We thank Michael for his time in the band and wish him the best of luck in future endeavours. Here is a statement from him.

After almost 10 years and tons of tours and festivals, I chose to leave D.T. for personal reasons. It's been so cool all this time to meet all the people and the tons of fans around the world, and all the friends that I got during this amazing journey - crew, fans and all the people I (we) worked with. I can't name everyone, as the list would take up all the space on the web site, but I'm going to miss all of you that worked and supported us (me) during these years, but this is the right thing to do, I really need a break.

There are no hard feelings in the band, it's a thing that we all felt was the best for D.T.. Now I'm going to kick back for a while, and then I'll see what's in the future for me. I wish the best for the rest off the boys in my old crew, and to all: I'm coming back in one way or another......thanx to all off you! Cheers!

/mickey

Bootleg alert - August 17, 2008

The compilation album "A closer end", that recently started appearing on the P2P networks as well as on Ebay and in certain record stores, is NOT an official Dark tranquillity album but a bootleg. It's very convincingly made, with a Century media logo, fake barcode and extensive booklet, but it's nevertheless a bootleg.

It's usually a better strategy to be silent about these things, but as a lot of people keep mailing us asking whether "A closer end" is a genuine album or not, and since the CD has started to appear on online discographies, presented as a legitimate release, we feel the need to set the record straight.

Israel show cancelled - August 10, 2008

Back on Swedish soil - June 24, 2008

Home again after the longest touring stint of our career! Without being too long-winded, let us express our gratitude to towards everyone that participated on the trip; the other bands, the crew, the promotors and of course all you people coming to the shows.

The 3rd leg of the tour, in South/Latin America, was as amazing as expected. Mexico and Colombia are amoung or fave places in earth, and getting to play in Chile and Argentina for the first time was fantastic. Rounding off by returning to Istanbul for the first time in 7 years was also an experience to remember. Our 2001 gig there was a bit crippled due to the fact that we had to bring a session drummer in on short notice, so it's great that we finally could deliver a full set to the ever passionate Turkish fans.

So - to conclude, we had a blast. Special you-should-have-been-there moment: The show in Argentina, where the audience stole the show by singing to us inbetween songs. This is how you give a band goosebumps:

Teatro Flores, Buenos Aires, Argentina - June 20, 2008.

We'll get some more video and photo material up in the near future, but for now we'll spend a few days relaxing before getting ready for the Peace & Love and Metaltown festivals this weekend. No rest for the wicked!

Speaking of tours, most of you have probably read about our headline touring plans for the autumn. Full press releases about this will be made in the near future, but for now we can confirm that we'll be part of the CLOSE-UP MADE US DO IT tour, supported by Engel and Dead by April. These are the dates.

Nov. 13 - John Dee - Oslo, NOR

Finland/Russia/Ukraine rocks - April 28, 2008

"The lesser faith" - live in Moscow, April 24.

Another successful tour has come to an end. Thanks to everyone that attended the gigs to show their support and make this such a memorable trip for us.

Finland was amazing, with a devoted and dedicated audience that didn't disappoint one bit. The highlight was the nearly sold out Tavastia show, which marked our first headline gig in Helsinki since 1996, when we played in the now legendary Lepakko club, supported by a young H.I.M. (!).

Russia and Ukraine was everything we expected and more, and it's no exaggeration to state that the performance in Moscow deserve a spot in the top 5 list of the best shows ever. We've been waiting for so many years to get over there, and other bands have spoken highly of the great reception they've gotten, but our sky high expectations were surpassed.

Finally, a huge thanks to everyone involved in the promotion/organization of these shows for their great professionalism and hospitality.

A bit late, but nevertheless: Check out this video interview from Stalkermusic, recorded during the recent UK tour with Omnium Gatherum:
http://stalkermusic.no-ip.org:8082/stalkermusic/index.pl?base=video&ref=17

Scrobble, children of the dark! - March 6, 2008

Nice to see that we've now reached more than 8 million plays on Last.fm, a site no doubt familiar to all you fellow geeks out there. As opposed to MySpace and similar sites, where bands with way too much time on their hands can add as many "friends" as they like, Last.fm actually shows what people are listening to. So, well...thanks for listening!

"Fiction" album of the year @ metalcentral.net - March 4, 2008

According to the visitors of metalcentral.net - one of Sweden's leading metal sites - "Fiction" was the best album of 2007. Who are we to argue?

Camden burning - Feb 11, 2008

The "British fiction" tour is over, and we'd like to send our warmest greetings to the crew, audience and the guys in Omnium Gatherum for making it an enjoyable and interesting trip. Photos and videos are beginning to surface on the usual sites, so do some searches to find.

The last show of the tour, at the Barfly in London, was definitely the most exciting of the lot. Apart from the sold out venue being packed with fans and friends from all over Europe, the blazing fire a mere two blocks away added a sense of urgency to the gig. Not knowing if the venue would have to be evacuated or - still worse - if we'd all go down like the Titanic orchestra if the flames would reach the nearby gas station, we played as if every note would be the last.

D.T. wins Manifestgalan award - Feb 11, 2008

That's right! We're the proud winners of the Manifestgalan award, Sweden's leading independent music price. "Fiction" won the metal category, and the jury's explanation of why reads as follows:

”De utnyttjar hela känsloregistret med en kombination av hjärta och hjärna, rått riffande och elektronik. Nyskapande spänning möter ett tryggt och inarbetat sound där detaljer och dynamik ges ett stort utrymme.”

Couldn't have said it better ourselves!

Russia calling - Feb 07, 2008

Finally! For the first time in our 19 year old career, we have the pleasure of announcing that we'll bring our madness to Russia. It's long overdue, so make sure that we'll prepare a very special show for the loyal supporters over there.

More details will follow in the near future, but these are the dates that just got confirmed:

Apr. 23: Kiev - Nau
Apr. 24: Moscow - Tochka
Apr. 25: St Petersburg - Port
Apr. 26: Krasnodar - Premera

UK tour going well - Feb 07, 2008

Pic: liveforthemetal.com

Just a quick note informing you all that the UK run is going great indeed. After having completed a relatively large scale tour of Asia, it's a nice contrast to get back to small, intimate venues where the audience is close enough to be bathing in our sweat. The crowds so far have been amazing, and the Finnish lads in Omnium Gatherum are delivering the goods - so everything is going according to the plan.

As can be seen in the touring agenda to the left, we're now confirmed for the Peace & Love festival in Borlänge, Sweden. Exact playing date isn't known as of yet. Further festival/tour announcements will follow shorly; there are lots of exciting things in the pipeline.

Domo Arigato - Jan 19, 2008

The asian tour was a phenomenal experience, and yesterday's show in Tokyo really reminded us about how the Japanese fans are among the most dedicated and devoted in the world. Huge thanks to all that attended the shows, the excellent promotors/crew and of course to The Haunted for being great as usual.

Here is a live clip from the Tokyo show:

Salutations from Osaka - Jan 15, 2008

10 years later - Nov 22, 2007

Continuing on the subject of videos, it's nice to see that some of the older footage that we sent around in our tapetrading days (way before the WWW became the default way of promoting a band, kids) have started to surface again.

The clip below isn't one of those, but a recording of "Of chaos and eternal night" from a show in Bradford, UK on the World Domination Tour 1997. Shot almost exactly ten years ago, with our old line-up:

Video interview with Mikael Stanne - Nov 16, 2007

D.T. to play in China! - Nov 6, 2007

That's right, folks! We're now confirmed to appear at MG Live Hall in Beijing on Jan 11, 2008. Needless to say, we're very much looking forward to our first ever live performance in China.

More info available here.

The shows in Hellas this weekend went great, and the Greek audience was (as usual) nothing short of fantastic. Also, huge thanks to Mr. Johan Edlund of Tiamat for lending his vocal chords to "Misery's crown" in Thessaloniki. It was the first time that we've had a guest musician onstage, and it was truly a memorable event.
